In
his exclusive interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer last night, embattled Sen.
Larry Craig (R-ID) claimed that he has “never used the internet“:
Matt, you won’t believe this. But I
don’t use the Internet. I don’t have a computer at my desk. I’ve
never used the Internet. It’s just not what I do. I
e-mail with my BlackBerry. No, I did not know that. I had no reason to
know that.
But as the Washington Examiner has
discovered, Craig actually has extensive experience with the Internet:
- – In an op-ed he wrote this summer on
the SCHIP health care program, Craig refers to doing a Google
search on the term “mission creep.”
- – He’s a member of the
Congressional Internet Caucus.
- – He co-sponsored a
bill designating June 2007 as National Internet Safety Month.
- – He was presented with the
2007 Internet Keep Safe Coalition Award.
- – On his Web site, he lists
as a top accomplishment a Silver Mouse Award given to his site
in 2003 and 2006 by the Congressional Management Foundation in 2003
and 2006.
- – When
he endorsed Mitt Romney for president, he did so on YouTube.

As the entire world
allies against Bush's Forever War he will Declare Martial Law, will a
filibuster proof Congress matter?
From James Joiner for An
Average American Patriot

As Bush prepares to embroil the entire
middle east in the hell he created for Iraq Turkey is preparing to go
into the Kurdish area in a more permanent "temporary force" as
we did in Vietnam. We know how that worked out, Forget about "only
a year" as Turkey thinks. It will be more or less permanent like
all the rest of the still just developing horror in the middle east.
Bush's militarism has forced Putin to confront him over his missile
shield and it has brought Russia together with Caspian Nations to ally
against Bush. Many of the thoughts on Bush and his militarism ruining
what might be right for the entire world if that was the concern instead
of Bush following what is right for him were very interesting but I want
to focus on something else so if you are interested please look at The
Link
I have always respected the Dalai Lama and could never fathom China
being so against him and little Tibet. I have the same curiosity towards
Myanmar but I really have to wonder about the timing in angering China
in such an in your face manner and Bush the arrogant idiot is peeved at
the Democrats and their holding Turkey accountable for genocide because
it might interfere with his warmongering making it more difficult but it
till not stop him.
Anyway, The US president, George Bush, today denied that he had risked
damaging American relations with China by attending an award ceremony
for the Dalai Lama, and urged Beijing to permit religious freedom. he is
but he doesn't care! China has vehemently protested over the public
ceremony at which the exiled spiritual leader and 1989 Nobel peace prize
laureate was awarded America's highest civilian honor, the Congressional
gold medal. Read
the whole story
Mr. Bush said the Dalai Lama was a
"universal symbol of peace and tolerance, a shepherd of the
faithful and a keeper of the flame for his people" as he handed him
the award.I am really disturbed at the audacity of the underhanded,
warmongering, universal symbol of war and intolerance giving the Dalai
Lama his deserved award for peace and tolerance. I am sick of this
picture!
That is still not my prime concern and question today. We are about to
enter unchartered waters as the world unites against Bush and his new
world order Forever Wars. This is not just a hope to me. I believe
people are waking up and it is going to happen but It started out as
such a faint hope for New York Senator Charles Schumer that he hardly
dared voice it. But as more and more Republicans retire or become
engulfed by scandal, it has become irresistibly imaginable: the idea
that Democrats might gain a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate
after the 2008 elections. "It's a very remote chance and every star
would have to align correctly," Schumer, who heads the Democratic
Senatorial Campaign Committee, told TIME. "But it's way too early
to make predictions."
It may not be too early, however, for Republicans to be fearing the
worst. As early as July Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell grimly
acknowledged: "When you look at our numbers, holding our own is the
best we can hope for." And that was before five long-serving
Senators recently announced their retirements, many of them in purple
states such as Virginia and Colorado that may be difficult for the
G.O.P. to defend. In a more conventional election year, the G.O.P. might
actually be making a push to regain a slim majority. The Senate is
currently split 49-49 with two Independents — Joe Lieberman of
Connecticut and Vermont's Bernie Sanders — who caucus with the
Democrats. But this cycle there are a range of factors working against
them. The
disappointing GOP
* The GOP's biggest problems are their corruption but
Mainly Bush, his abusive powers, and his Forever Wars. Now my concern! As
the world is lining up to ally against Bush, his upcoming attack on
Iran, and his militaristic warmongering, many of us fully expect the
idiot to cancel elections and declare Martial Law. You can help me with
this but would not that make Filibuster and Congress worthless and
powerless as you and I? We are in so much trouble, our future!

I Don't
Get It
From Amy Branham for Amy's
Head
Here's something that I just don't
"get"...
Recently there has been a lot of talk on both sides of the political aisle
about SCHIP. One side has brought out a couple of families whose children
have benefitted greatly from the program and the other side has completely
trashed these families.
First there was the story of Graeme Frost and his sister who had been in
an accident and needed a lot of medical treatment and physical therapy
that their parents couldn't afford. The so-called "right" didn't
like it and they immediately proceeded to trash the hell out of the family
and even came out with unsubstantiated stories of how much money this
family had and even went so far as to publish this family's home address
and personal information on the internet. They said that the family (and
the children) were not deserving of the help they got.
Next is the Wilkerson family whose little girl, Bethany, was born with a
heart defect and had to have surgery to keep her alive. This family has
been smeared all over the place because the mother quit a job where she
had insurance four years before she ever conceived Bethany. It is said
that these parents are irresponsible, among many other things.
I'm not going to go into all of the terrible things said about these
families, you can google them and find out for yourself.
Here is what I don't get... The ultra-conservative Republican right wing
of our country, those who call themselves Christian and are not supposed
to judge others (according to their very own Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ) says, do not use birth control, practice abstinence and no
abortions. Okay, so where does that leave people who do not adhere to
their practices and ways? Let's say a couple does have an "oops"
baby and they are poor and don't have medical insurance. Where does that
leave them? Should they go ahead and have the baby but adopt it out to
some other family who does have money and insurance? Really, what options
are out there, according to these conservative idiots?
Or how about a young woman who makes a mistake and gets pregnant because
she is sexually active? I mean, come on people, these things DO happen
because we are human beings. What alternatives does a woman have? To
practice abstinence is to deny our own biology and is an unrealistic
expectation. I'm not saying that everyone should be shagging everyone else
all the time, but there is some kind of happy medium in the mix somewhere.
Birth control pills, condoms, and other various and sundry items allow us
to have safe, protected, responsible sex -- but the far right wing doesn't
want that, either. And if you do somehow end up pregnant, the far right
doesn't want a woman to have an abortion because, well, they KNOW when
life begins and that must be protected at all costs.
But they don't want to help you if you get yourself into a position where
you have created a life (that is so very, very sacred to them). Let these
children be born into poverty and the expectation is, I guess, that if you
do this, you're supposed to give your child up for adoption to some rich
family that can spend money on it.
Yeah, that life is precious while it's in the womb to the prolifers. Once
that baby emerges from its mother's womb, it is no longer precious to
them. Let that baby suffer and go hungry for the rest of its life, they
don't care.
I think this is hypocrisy in its highest form. The religious conservatives
should practice what they preach, and if they are going to follow Jesus,
they need to read again what he said: Suffer the children to come unto Me.
In as much as you have done it to the least of these my brethren, ye have
done it unto me. Love One Another. Judge not that ye be not judged.
I freely and openly admit that I am not a follower of Christ and I do have
somewhat hedonistic tendencies from time to time. That's probably why I
just do not understand the absolute hypocrisy I see in all of this and why
it all seems so inconsistent with the teachings of their religion.
I just don't "get" it...

About the Olympics ... and China
By Enigma4Ever for Watergate
Summer

This is a painful subject, and I will
probally be accused of being Unpatriotic and a Bad American for writing
it, but it needs to be said....and talked about. So here it goes.
During the Brutality of the Killing of Monks in Burmah a few weeks back,
my teenage son 6-6 and I talked and we ended up talking about ways we
could help the Monks and also help thwart the Military Regime, and if your
read below we again talked about Tank Man and the Tianamen Square
Massacre. ( see Courage Post of 10-11-07). This Burmah Discussion led to a
discussion about Something Much larger than Brutality and Human Rights.
We ended up having a discussion about China and the Summer Olympics of
2008.
I have many concerns about China, mostly that we owe them Too Much Money.
It in many ways has become an uncomfortable Hostage Situation. We are in
essence being held hostage to them. we are buying too many poorly made
goods from them, many are made by forced labor and child labor and also do
not meet America Standards for 1970's. We have had multiple recalls from
their goods adn toiletrie products, and shamelessly for millions of Toys.
And the American Government has remained Silent, Complicit on these
Damaged and Damaging Goods being sold to Lower and Middle Income Families.
I keep wondering if it was a case of Lead Lined Gold Clubs being sold in
Boca - would there be an Uproar?.
Our Children have been the deadly pawns in this Deadly Game of Import
Chess, and they probally have indeed been exposed to incredible levels of
lead, that has not been seen in this Country in atleast 20 years. That is
an issue, the lead, a neurotoxin, can cause Learning Disabilities, ADHD,
and even in High levels, Autism. ( Rate of Current Childhood Autism in
America is 1:150 or 1:166 depending on which stats you read, this has
increased 1000 fold in the past 10 years).Since Autism has been increasing
in Mammoth Epidemic Proportions, one would think that this would be
concerning the Medical Commmunity. One would even Hope that the AMA would
come out and make a stand and a Statement about the Lead issue. Even the
recall was handled like RSVP 's to a dignataries' Birthday party "You
may simply return the gift for EXCHANGE". ( Surely they must be
kidding, so people are suposed to exchange for What? yet another lead
lined toy?). The Toys should be thrown out, but sadly they will even need
to be thrown OUT with care, and sent to Contamintated FillZones.
Now back to the issue of the Olympics. So 6-6 brings up a couple of issues
that I had not even pondered. The First One, WHO is providing Security for
the Olympics ? Will Blackwater Cowboys be protecting our Athletes and
Teams? His other concern, that during the Summer Olympics that is when
Bush will make his next Warmongering Move, if Something did happen at the
event, and some great tragedy were to god-forbid befall the Athletes, and
then (cough) he will be forced to declare Martial Law before the
Elections. He also pointed out that we are MORE hated Around the World,
than Anytime in History. The Example he sited, " The Miss World
Pageant, when Miss America Came on Stage, she fell, but the crowd was
booing before she fell". He is worried that our Athletes are hated by
and for what Bush has done.
He also pointed out that suposedly Iraq was bombed, shocked and awed due
to many False Reasons, and that one of the False reasons was Evil Brutal
Dictatorship/ Regime and Crimes against the People, yet now we are suposed
to go "Play" in one of the Countries that has the SAME Problem ?
The Hypocrisy is glaring and not lost upon the World Watchers.
And lastly, we talked about China and their Human Rights Abuses and their
Communist Rule and how we constantly use that against OTHER countries,
such as Cuba. Yet we are trading with them, and encouraging trade and even
giving them American Trades, and Industries and Jobs. ( At our house, for
Many Reasons, yes, we are indeed Boycotting ALL Chinese goods.)
I actually don't have an answer as to whether we should be planning a
Boycott of the Olympics. But for the First Time Ever, I am actually giving
it careful thought. And More Thought is needed. So tell me what are your
thoughts....
Question for Edwards
By Phil in NY for E-News
Daily
U.S.
- I posed the following
question to the Edwards campaign on their website this morning. This is an
issue I've been wrestling with, and its really important to me and many
others:
I have a question. I really like John Edwards, but he has yet to
mention Israel once, except for that little snafu, saying something along
the lines of, "Israel is the greatest threat to world peace", or
something like that.
As a Jewish voter, this is a big deal for me and many other Jewish
Democrats, who feel like we're being ignored by him. Until he starts to
look our direction, what are we supposed to think?
I haven't really heard Edwards talk much about Jewish issues, in fact, I
don't think he ever has now that I think about it. He has yet to come to
any Jewish Democratic sponsored
events. Both Hillary and Obama
have. I'm sure John Edwards is supportive. I think
we just need to hear him vocalize
his support.

I noticed many blogs mentioning Bush's
latest approval numbers were down to 24%, and, like many others, found it
amusing, to say the least. I also find it dismaying that nearly one out of
four still approve of the pathological murdering bastard. There's more
Nazi's in this country than I had thought.
Then I read ONE blog, that mentioned Congress's approval rating
was......11%. Led by.....um.....ah....damn! The name was just on the tip
of my tongue, too! What was his name, again? No! Wait!! We celebrated the
first ever woman speaker, didn't we? That gutless timid thing! What
the hell was her name again? The one that did nothing, all the
time! You know who I mean, surely. Whatever.
That 11%? Not to scare you or anything, but that's US
owns that number. Yessiree doggie!
"Democrats
take over Congress!"
Remember all the channels saying that, back a year or so ago? It's still
true, or at least they say it is.
I have no way of proving it.
But I damn sure know who 11% of the voters are gonna vote for in November.
See y'all at the funeral. I hear some gal from New York will be giving the
eulogy. First ever... ah, screw it. That shit's starting to leave a bad
taste in my mouth!

Our Needy President
By Pamela Leavey for The
Katrinacrat Blog and Democratic
Daily
When I read earlier today that Bush had
"insisted
that using a veto is 'one way to ensure I am relevant,'" all I
could think is what a needy little man he is. If using the power of the
veto makes him feel "relevant,"
clearly he's a man with a self-esteem issue. But, of course we already
know that. Don't we. Just as Bush felt the need to declare, “I’m
the decider, and I decide what is best,” Bush now feels the need to
declare just how relevant he is, and make it known that using the power of
the veto ensures that relevency.
But the truth is Bush is far from relevant these days and that was evident
this morning when he "hastily
scheduled" a press
conference after a Reuters/Zogby poll was released showing that
"deepening unhappiness with President George W. Bush and the U.S.
Congress soured the mood of Americans and sent Bush's approval rating to
another record low this month." The truth is Bush's ratings are in
the toilet, as Dan Froomkin notes via the Zogby poll:
"Bush's
job approval rating fell to 24 percent from last month's record low
for a Zogby poll of 29 percent. A paltry 11 percent gave Congress a
positive grade, tying last month's record low."
"There is a real question among Americans now about how relevant
this government is to them," pollster John Zogby told Whitesides.
"They tell us they want action on health care, education, the war
and immigration, but they don't believe they are going to get it."
Bush has now tied President Nixon's all-time low approval rating as
measured by the Gallup
Poll. But Congress is doing even worse.
So, as Froomkin reported Bush "used
what he called his 'bully pulpit,'" today, "telling
reporters 'I was trying to get your attention focused on the fact that
major pieces of legislation aren't moving, and those that are, are at a
snail's pace.'"
But, here's the rub... We have Republicans in Congress that are attempting
to force Bush's will on the American people, even though they have shown
almost a year ago at the voting booths, that they don't want Bush's will
anymore. So stuff gets stalled in Congress, and if, just if, something
does pass that the American people do want, like SCHIP, then Bush get out
his little "relevant" pen and signs away the legislation,
stalling things in Congress once again.
George W. Bush is a needy little man, a "bully" with a pulpit
and he and his GOP cohorts in Congress will continue to fight the will of
the people as long as he remains in office. It's that simple.
The Blame Game: Hey, I Thought W Didn't
Like People Playing It?
By Windspike for Educational
Whisper
You remember a bit ago when people started pointing fingers around the
leak situation and Valarie Plame, no?
You remember the
W, Rove and Co chastising a wide assortment of people for
"playing the blame game" revolving around the Fed response to
Katrina, don't you?
You remember the Presidential spokesmodel, Scotty
McMessage McClellan saying we don't "play the blame game,"
and suggesting that people shouldn't do it otherwise they would receive
the Parental Look of Disdain from the President, among others?
Well, of course, here's the president just the other day doing what? Of
course, it couldn't be "playing the blame game," could it? Let's
have a look:
Q Is it all their fault that these bills aren't moving, that you've got
these veto threats out?
THE PRESIDENT: I
think it is their fault that bills aren't moving, yeah.
What? That doesn't sound like a heaping load of blame to you? But really,
the veto is a last resort for failed diplomacy. Who is not bending to the
will of the people here?
Let's have a look at how he justifies his actions:
As I said, I'm not a part of the legislative branch. All I can do is ask
them to move bills. It's up to the leaders to move the bills. And
you bet I'm going to put veto threats out. Of course, I want to
remind you, I put a lot of veto threats out when the Republicans were in
control of Congress. I said, now, if you overspend I'm going to veto
your bills, and they listened, and we worked together. Whether or not
that's the case, we'll find out.
Now if that doesn't sound a lot like the spoiled child taking his ball and
going home because he is not winning the game, I don't know what does.
Really, that's not how I understand the history of the President's
relationship with the prior congress. But of course, I'm critical of a man
who brought us into an unnecessary, protracted, bloody, expensive war with
and inside of Iraq. I can't rightly and most certainly don't trust him to
act in our best interest. |
Don't Ask, Don't
Tell, Don't Count On It
By Christopher for From

No wonder the Pentagon can’t win the war
in Iraq. They’re so lame that they can’t even get their advertising
straight (no pun intended.)

The Big Three: Army,
Navy and Air Force unwittingly advertised
for recruits on a website for gays, who are barred from military service
if they are open about their sexual orientation.
When informed Tuesday
by USA TODAY that they were advertising on GLEE.com,
a networking website for gay professionals, recruiters expressed surprise
and said they would remove the job listings.
“This is the first
I’ve heard about it,” said Maj. Michael Baptista, advertising branch
chief for the Army National Guard, which will spend $6.5 million on
Internet recruiting this year. “We didn’t knowingly advertise on that
particular website,” which he said does not “meet the moral
standards” of the military.
Capt. Jack Hanzlik, a
Navy recruiting spokesman, said his service ordered more than 8,000 ads
taken off GLEE, which stands for Gay, Lesbian & Everyone Else. By late
Wednesday, most were gone.
Marine Corps ads on
GLEE were only for two civilian jobs not covered by the military’s
“don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which allows gays to serve in
uniform only if they keep quiet about their sexual orientation.

The Age of Oil is Nearly Over
From the
Boomer Chronicles
We don’t have much time to change our
ways.
I saw a documentary film last night that
changed my world — A
Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash. The film is 83 minutes long and
manages to pack in everything you need to know about the end of the
availability of cheap oil.
Beyond all the talking heads, one of the
most valuable pieces of information in the film is its explanation of how
oil forms. Oil is often called a ‘non-renewable’ resource, and
here’s why. Oil is one of the basic fossil
fuels, created by the decay of small aquatic organisms in oceanic
rocks billions of years ago. That’s it. It’s all the oil we’re
getting. That (relatively) brief moment in geologic history accounts for
all the oil available on earth.
To me, the second-most important point was
the reminder that oil/petroleum use is not limited to fuel for cars,
trucks, ships and jet planes. Oil is required in all manufacturing, from
the creation of a toothbrush to a Toyota.
Third, whether we realize it or not, oil
is at the source of most wars today, and when easily accessible oil runs
out, watch for the rise of even greater aggression and global conflicts.
Honestly, the world is only at the
beginning of awareness of the fossil fuel crisis. And the talking heads
say we are many years too late to address it. But let’s not roll over
and play dead. These days there are many things we can do: figuring out
how to reduce one’s carbon
footprint, biking
instead of using other vehicles, eating less
meat, not
buying bottled water, and on and on and on.

Empty Words
By Ei Blake for Deep
Thought
A few months ago during the Michael Vick imbroglio, basketball player
Stephon Marbury defended dogfighting as 'a sport.' I took
Marbury to task for his choice of words, and wrote,
Well, I suppose that you can call anything a 'sport,' no matter how
barbaric it is, even dwarf-tossing or Russian roulette.
And I suppose you could refer to a Volkswagen as a Rolls Royce, but at the
end of the day it remains a Volkswagen.
Marbury's comments were however a tiny transgression compared to what we
have heard from both the Bush administration and from wordsmiths on talk
radio and elsewhere on the far right.
I don't have to, but I will remind you of the unfunded mandate that has
resulted in schools encouraging underachieving students to drop out for
fear of the budgetary consequences of that child remaining in class, that
is called, 'no child left behind,' and of the legislation that increases
the amount of pollutants in our air called, the 'clear skies act' or in
the water that is called the 'clean water act,' or of the clear-cutting
bill called, 'the healthy forests act.'
We've seen 'support the troops' become a buzzword for 'support the
President's foreign policy,' even while the same administration works
feverishly to cut funding for the VA and denies disability claims for
thousands of vets wounded in Iraq, who come home with life-altering
injuries.
And recently we've seen that the right likes to refer to the U.S.
healthcare system as 'the best in the world.' But that is simply not true.
People in other industrialized countries such as Canada live longer than
we do, have lower infant mortality and in fact, as I
wrote about recently, avail themselves of our so-called 'superior'
system in vanishingly small numbers, while many, many times as many
Americans have bought prescription drugs from Canadian sources, despite
the best efforts of our government to prevent it. Of course Americans
can't use Canada's healthcare system because they bar us from it. In fact,
our healthcare system is worse than those in Europe or Canada, plus it is
much more expensive in terms of our GDP, but those on the right continue
to delude themselves that they can call a turkey an eagle.
And today, the house will certainly vote not to override the President's
veto on SCHIP. All along, they've been questioning the income limits. But
here is the dirty little secret: the income limits are the same as they
are in the current authorization of the program. And for that matter, the
number bandied about ($83,000 for a family of four) is not the federal
limit on income, that is the maximum that a state can request be
eligible for the program but the President has to approve the request.
Other wise the eligibility cap remains where it is at the Federal level,
about fifteen thousand dollars less than that. But you won't hear that on
right wing radio, they'd much rather smear a twelve year old whose family,
despite what they make, will soon lose their home because of medical
bills.
But I suppose all this wordsmithing works well for conservatives who don't
want to spend a dime on anything.
Words are cheap.

Cheney's Law
By Doug Masson for Masson's
Blog
Last night I watched the Frontline story
entitled Cheney’s
Law. If half of that is true, any real patriot would be pissed off
at the monstrous power grab Dick Cheney, David
Addington, and John
Yoo have tried to execute on behalf of the executive. I paraphrase,
but essentially what these chowderheads are arguing is that the
President gets to be a king and there’s not a damn thing Congress can
do about it so long as the President mutters the terms
“commander-in-chief” or “war” every so often. It’s been
dressed up under the moniker “unitary
executive theory” but I don’t see any practical limitations that
distinguish it from monarchy.
Torturing prisoners even when American
law says you can’t? It’s fine if the President says go ahead
(alternately, you can go all Humpty-Dumpty
and re-name torture as “enhanced interrogation”.) Tap Americans
telephone calls? Sure.
Throw Americans into prisons without charges? You
bet.
The Frontline segment pointed out that there really didn’t seem to be
anything in the unitary executive theory that would stand in the way of
the President deploying troops on American soil at any time for any
reason he or she sees fit.
I should mention at this point that I
seem to have misjudged former Attorney General John Ashcroft. I strongly
disagree with him on any number of policy matters, but at some
fundamental level I believe we agree on how this democratic republic
ought to be governed. This was demonstrated by the hospital
room interlude. The saga essentially went like this. Cheney and the
White House created the NSA wiretap program which had to be re-certified
periodically by the Attorney General, Ashcroft at the time. Apparently
John “Dr. Yes” Yoo at the DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel had been
rubber stamping anything Cheney and Addington had sent his way,
including the NSA program. At some point, the head of Office of Legal
Counsel position came open. Ashcroft did not appoint Yoo to the position
because he felt that he was too much under the sway of the Vice
President and the White House. Instead, he appointed Jack Goldsmith.
Goldsmith reviewed the wiretap program and determined that it was
unconstitutional. He passed his concerns along to Ashcroft’s second in
command, James Comey, who agreed. Ashcroft had determined not to
re-certify the program. Waiting until he was in a weakened state at the
hospital, Alberto Gonzales and Andy Card went to the hospital to get
Ashcroft’s signature. Comey and Goldsmith apparently caught wind of
this and dashed off to the hospital. Ashcroft, who was in a grave state
of health, nevertheless gathered his strength, articulated what was
wrong with the NSA wiretap program, and stated that, in any case, Comey
was the acting AG.
At this point, I figure there are three
types of players in these sagas — guys like Cheney, Addington, and
Yoo, people who know what they’re doing and have a profoundly
anti-democratic view of the power of the executive branch; guys like
Gonzales and Rove who are probably indifferent about the larger
constitutional issues and simply have a short term desire to obtain
power and political gain for their team; and guys like Ashcroft, Comey,
and Goldsmith who have very conservative policy views but believe in the
liberal democratic principles upon which our country was founded.
My understanding from my history classes
is that, at the founding of this Republic, there were two major lines of
thought from which we could have chosen: the first was along the lines
of Thomas Hobbes Leviathan:
basically, the state of nature is so nasty that you authorize one
super-predator (the king) to keep the rest of the predators at bay. The
King can do anything he wants, but at least you have only one thing to
worry about. The other line was reflected by John Locke’s Treatises
on Government in which the power of the government arises from the
consent of the governed and is designed to protect individual rights of
life, liberty and property. Clearly, our Founders went with Locke. They
created a government of limited power with checks and balances so that
one branch of government would counteract the other. Madison, et al.
understood that government would be made up of men, not angels. It was
therefore necessary that the government be designed such that the
individual ambitions of powerful men would play against each other,
limiting the damage done to society. So, it’s laughable to think that
they would enact a Constitution that gave the executive such unbridled
power as to have no effective check if ever the executive scares the
citizenry about threats, foreign or domestic. But Cheney and his men are
working hard to undermine the government created by Madison, Hamilton,
and the rest.
Cheney, in particular, seems to have
been scarred by the battles of his youth. He was a young chief of staff,
in over his head during the Ford administration. Ford had to deal with
the aftermath of Nixon’s criminal activities and the Congressional
backlash. Apparently Cheney didn’t like being on the business end of
Congressional authority. Solution: neuter the Congress and empower the
executive.
And, unfortunately, there are a hardcore
group of Republicans who will support him, not necessarily because they
agree with him philosophically, but because Republicans are their team
— much like I would cheer if the Colts were the beneficiary of a
phantom pass interference call against the Patriots. Only this is our
society we’re talking about, not some sort of game.
I had this post in mind when I was
reviewing the local blogosphere today. In this light, one post by the Hoosier
Pundit was especially annoying. It was a hooray-Republicans,
boo-Democrats, jeering kind of post wherein he seemed to endorse
legislation that said this:
Nothing in this Act or the amendments
made by this Act shall be construed to prohibit the intelligence
community from conducting surveillance needed to prevent Osama Bin
Laden, Al Qaeda, or any other foreign terrorist organization from
attacking the United States or any United States person.
Refusing to adopt this language, he
seems to assert, reflects ambivalence on the part of Democrats for
opposing al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden. The old “you’re either with us
or with the terrorists” line of bullshit. Now, reading his posts,
Scott seems like a pretty smart guy with his primary fault (as I see it)
being too much of a team player. (And, if he wanders by here, he should
feel free to speak for himself). If we could somehow look at government
and legislation in isolation without knowing who would benefit,
Republicans or Democrats, I suspect he and I would come to a lot of the
same conclusions about what is good or bad.
There simply has to be some
accountability and limits on power exerted by any segment of government.
Citizens can’t become so afraid that they’re willing to abdicate
their liberties and the liberties of future generations simply in return
for promises of security. Where are we going to draw the line? Tapping
our phones without anything like probable cause? How about seizing our
property if the President alleges that having the property might help
fight al Qaeda? Seizing our guns because it might help keep weapons out
of the hands of terrorists? Closing down houses of worship because
terrorists have been known to seek sanctuary in mosques? Is there
nothing we are unwilling to sacrifice because of the spectre of those
who wish us harm?
Congress needs to rein in an
overreaching executive and should not be cowed by self-serving
“you’re helping the terrorist” rhetoric from the President and his
cronies. And citizens need to recognize the basic liberties that are at
stake and value their freedom more than their safety. (Citizens also
need to maintain a little perspective on the threat — at the moment,
they’re a lot more likely to get killed in a car crash or by any
number of more mundane threats than by a terrorist act.)
Democrats aren't going to condemn
Turkey?
From Kay in Maine for White
Noise Insanity
Good.
Nancy Pelosi was going to bring forth a
resolution condemning Turkey on their Armenian
massacre that happened in the early part of the 20th
century, but support for this is waning. Honestly, I don’t think
it’s a good idea, and besides, why would we want to piss off another
country? Hell, we’ve got enough already hating our guts, so why add
more?
From the New
York Times:
WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 — Support for a
House resolution condemning as genocide the mass killings of Armenians
in 1915 continued to weaken today as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who only
days ago vowed to bring the measure to the floor of the House,
signaled that she may be changing her mind.
[…]
The measure’s prospects were
weakened further today when Representative John P. Murtha, the
Pennsylvania Democrat who heads the Appropriations subcommittee on
military matters, spoke out against it.
“What happened nearly 100 years ago
was terrible,” said Mr. Murtha, who has urged the speaker not to
bring up the resolution for a vote. “I don’t know whether it was a
massacre or a genocide, but that is beside the point. The point is, we
have to deal with today’s world.”
We know what the Turks did years ago,
but we also know what George Bush & Dick Cheney have done in Iraq
for the past five years. We can’t forget either of these genocides and
the only publicly condemning we should be doing right now is against the
Bush Regime! Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been slaughtered
either by our military or because of the civil war that George &
Dickie ignored for years. Over two million Iraqis have fled their
country. This is where the condemning should begin. Nancy Pelosi needs
to be bringing THIS resolution to the floor….pronto!

Maybe a resolution against Bush to
condemn him for vetoing health insurance for the poor children of
America too? Yes! Absolutely! While this bastard is being paid over
$400,000/year and gets the best medical insurance on the planet, you’d
think he want to spread his good fortune around? Nope! He’d rather
hoard what is good for him, take away what is good and needed for
others, all while he’s spending billions a week in a country that
didn’t attack us and which has become the personal bank account for
his corporate buddies! It’s sick.
CONDEMN GEORGE BUSH, DICK CHENEY, AND
THE REST OF THE BUSH REGIME. Condemning Turkey now is wrong, but that
doesn’t mean we can’t forget what happened back then. Right now we
can stop George Bush from continuing his for crying out loud!
Right Wing Pundit on Hillary: "At
least call her a Vaginal-American"
From Pookyshoehorn for Ramblings
of a Madwoman
It looks like the gloves have come off, and the Hillary Clinton
haters are now showing their true colors. As far as we have come in this
country to treat everyone as equals, it's now back to slamming Clinton
because ... she's a woman! Gasp!
Watch
the clip from Tucker here.
From Crooks
and Liars:
This clip from Monday’s Tucker pegged the creepy/sexist
meter. Right wing pundit Cliff May and Washington Post columnist
Eugene Robinson were talking about Senator Hillary Clinton and whether
or not it should matter that some women may vote for her based on her
gender.
Tucker throws out a frat boy style genitalia joke and spouts off about
women’s loyalty to the Clintons. Not to be outdone, May, who is as
whacked out as they come in the GOP, tells Tucker he doesn’t think
people should vote for a candidate based on their race, religion or
gender — then burps this beauty across the table which is sure to
have the ladies lining up to join the Republican Party:
May: “At least call her a Vaginal-American.”
If anyone is still watching Tucker Carlson, please stop. Or explain
to me why you are watching. He's immature, homophobic, sexist, and no,
he can't dance. A recent poll showed that 94% of women under age 34 say
they're more likely to vote in the next presidential election if there's
a woman on the ballot, and Tucker Carlson is skeered!
Vaginal-American? I try to keep it clean here, so does that mean I can
call May a Penis-Head?
