Interviewer Stupidity - The Mormon
Polygamy Question - Ad Nauseum
From Charlotte Weybright for Berry
Street Beacon
The following was an exchange while Mitt Romney was still
governor of Massachusetts.
Interviewer: Governor Romney, thanks for
being on the show.
Mitt: (all smiles) Great to be here, Joan.
Interviewer: Governor, a lot of Americans
are asking themselves, Can a Mormon be president? How do your
respond to that?
Mitt: (all smiles) Well, Joan, one of the
great things about this country is that we enjoy the freedom to
worship as we see fit, to raise our children in a belief system
that will give them the moral upbringing they need to be good
citizens who contribute to the betterment of society. But my
hope is that people won’t vote for me, or refuse to vote for
me, because of my faith. I would hope that people would look at
my record as a public official. For example, when I balanced the
budget in the state of Massachu–
Interviewer: Yes yes, but isn’t it true
that the Mormons have embraced some rather, shall we say,
unorthodox beliefs? Take polygamy. When most Americans think of
Mormons, they think of polygamy.
Mitt: (chuckling) Mormons don’t practice
polygamy, Joan. The church banned the practice over a hundred
years ago. Mormons are just like any other Christian faith. We
love our children, we–
Interviewer: Yes yes, but as a Mormon,
are you telling me that you’ll never take another wife? I
mean, we Americans can only take one First Lady. What would we
call the other wives? Second Lady? Third Lady? I mean, who would
choose the drapes?
Mitt: No no, Joan. It’s just me and Ann.
In fact, one of my goals as president is to strengthen the
American family and–
Interviewer: Not even one more wife?
Mitt: Uh, no, Joan. Not even one.
Interviewer: Not even one teeny tiny wife?
Mitt: I don’t follow you.
Several weeks ago, during a debate where the audience was
allowed to ask questions, the same issue arose. An individual who
was given the opportunity to ask a serious question of Mr. Romney
prefaced his “real” question with an inquiry as to which one
of his wives would be First Lady. Perhaps the questioner thought
he was being cute or personable, but at this point the lack of
knowledge about the Mormon religion is getting old.
Enough said. I am not a Republican, and I won’t be voting for
Mitt Romney, but stupidity, rudeness, and failure to check
historical knowledge drive me crazy.
When pop culture starts dissing the
dollar, we're in trouble
From John Aravosis for AMERICABlog
There have been a series of articles in the past few days
about how now even rappers and supermodels are giving up on the US dollar
in favor of the euro. (Interestingly, my Spanish blogger friend Marc Vidal
wrote
about this a week ago, before the story went everywhere). Here's the Independent's
take on it:
Pay attention as you watch the catchy new music video
from the mega-star rapster Jay-Z, "Blue Magic", and see if you
can't spot the product placement. It is not a fancy car that he is
endorsing – although both his rides, a Rolls- Royce and soft-top
Bentley, are plenty spiffy – but rather a currency – and it is not
the dollar.
Like so many in the hip-hop genre, the song is a celebration of
ostentatious wealth. But capturing the attention of commentators in this
clip, shot in the glimmering, neon-lit canyons of New York City, are the
repeated glimpses of flickering wads of €500 notes. Jay-Z has thus
performed a currency defection: the dollar is not just down, it is out.
The euro is the new bling.
And Bloomberg
shows that the dollar dumping is even wider:
Kuwait, freed by the U.S. from Saddam Hussein's army in
1991, unhinged its currency from the dollar in May, and pressure is
building for Gulf Arab neighbors to follow suit. Qatar's prime minister,
Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim bin Jaber al-Thani, complained Nov. 11 that the
dollar's drop is cutting oil and gas income, leaving less to invest
abroad. The United Arab Emirates may drop the dirham's peg to the
dollar, analysts said.
The central bank in Iraq, a country the U.S. military has occupied since
2003, last month said it, too, wants to diversify reserves away from
mostly dollars.
Korean Shipbuilders
Korea's central bank this week urged shipbuilders to issue invoices in
won, the Korean currency, and take out more hedging policies to guard
against a weakened dollar.
I took a few classes in international economics in grad
school, and did well, but still, the issue of the dollar and its affects
on the economy confuses the hell out of me at times, and none of these
articles make it any clearer. I get how interest rates affect the dollar
exchange (higher interest rates mean you get a higher return when you buy
dollars, which increases demand for dollars which increases the dollar
exchange rate). What I don't get is this
line from the Bloomberg piece:
Ultimately, if the dollar's swoon depresses U.S. stocks
or threatens global growth, Group of Seven major industrial nations may
have to do more than issue communiqués.
How does a weak dollar affect US stocks or global growth?
I.e., what's the tie between the dollar exchange rate and a real impact on
the US and/or world economy other than people making more or less money by
investing in dollars?
And while we're at it, I don't think I'd mind a good explanation of the
entire issue of other countries "buying dollars." Why and how do
they "buy dollars" and what's the impact of them selling the
dollars they have? We always hear about how China is financing our debt -
what does that really mean, and what happens if they stop?
Any enterprising economists want to take a stab at writing a very concise
explanation of all of this that I can post in the future?
A Boomer Chronicles
Exclusive: Strange Affliction Strikes Many Older Men and Women
From The
Boomer Chronicles
You’ve
heard of ED, right? Bob Dole had it and spoke freely about it on
television. No shame in erectile
dysfunction.
Well, now there’s something called EC. It’s an addiction that’s
been around for years, but today, The Boomer Chronicles will expose it
publicly. EC involves going to tourist attractions and making those
weird elongated
coins in machines and collecting them. With retirement coming up,
some of you may want to consider taking this up.
I remember as a kid putting 25 or 50 cents into a machine that
would smash a penny into a new shape (Turtleback Zoo! The Franklin
Mint!) and then I would promptly lose interest in the dumb little
souvenir. But these EC sufferers love these things. And they’re
adults!
I’ve always wondered if it was legal to destroy and deface U.S.
currency. Here’s the answer they give:
United States (YES): The United States Codes under Title 18,
Chapter 17, and Section 331, “prohibits the mutilation, diminution
and falsification of United States coinage.” However, it has been
the opinion of some individual officers at the Treasury Department,
though without any indication of approval, the foregoing statute
does not prohibit the mutiliation of coins if done without
fraudulent intent or if the mutilated coins are not used
fraudulently.
There’s an Elongated
Collectors organization you can join. They take themselves really
seriously: they have a board of directors, bylaws and conferences.

Denying Chamber Of Commerce Puts Out Idiotic Ad
From Cliff
Schecter
Just watch this and laugh appropriately at these idiots. In case you
weren't aware, the Chamber of Commerce are complete shills for the GOP and
if they thought it was "good for business" they'd probably
advocate nuking Australia.
They, of course, are cool with foreign dictators dictating oil prices,
however. They also think, I guess, that coastal dwellers' being under
water in 50 years is good for business.
Funny thing, it's not so good for your business if you're dead.
The Bogus War on Christmas
From TomCat for Politics
Plus
It's the time of year again when the the theocon GOP
hypocrites trot out false claim after false claim to
whip their wing-nut base into a state of blathering
paranoia. The following is a Copy/Paste from an
action alert by James Dobson's American Family
Association. Normally, I cite such things with a
link, but I refuse to direct traffic to support
Supply-side Jesus, the one theocons made up, because
the real one has too strong a track record condemning
their ilk.
At PetSmart,
Christmas doesn't exist
Send an e-mail to PetSmart and ask
why they refuse to include Christmas in their
promotion, choosing to only use holiday.
At PetSmart, Christmas doesn't exist.
It is not to be found anywhere on their Web Site. AFA
checked out the local PetSmart store and there was no
Christmas there, either.
A search on PetSmart's home page found 252
references to "holiday." It also found 43
references to "Christmas." But,
alas, this is very misleading. When you click on
"Christmas" you are directed to a page
containing the same gifts you get when you search for
holiday. Of all the items that pop up when
you search for Christmas, not a single one mentions
Christmas or is identified as being a Christmas
gift... [emphasis original]
Let's look at this. If
they do in fact have references to Christmas, then
their claim is a flat out lie. Christmas DOES
exist there! How is it verymisleading
to offer the same gifts for whatever holiday one
visits? Should PetSmart discriminate against
Jews by offering lesser gifts for Hanukkah? OY!
Poor Roverwitz!! Nonetheless, I wandered over to
PetSmart's web site to see this despicable evil for
myself, and brought you back a screen capture of what
i found there.
Does this look like a war on
Christmas to you? The fact is there is no war on
Christmas. There is however a war on sanity, a
war on diversity, and a war on tolerance, brought to
you by the theocons on the Bush/GOP Religious Reich.
While thinking about pets,
please remember that I am an equal opportunity TomCat,
and will gladly accept back scratches and belly rubs
under both Christmas trees and Hanukkah bushes.

The Bush
Regime is helping Musharraf secure his nukes
From Kay in
Maine for White
Noise Insanity
Uh huh. Apparently over the past six
years, the Bush Regime has spent close to
$100 million on this SECRET PROGRAM to help
ole Musharraf secure his nukes. You know
what that means! No securing has happened
over the past six years! Yep. And where did
this $100 million come from? Let me guess:
from the money stolen over in Iraq that was
put in SECRET BANK ACCOUNTS in Dubai with
all transactions going through the RNC
servers? I bet!
But with the future of that country’s
leadership in doubt, debate is
intensifying about whether Washington has
done enough to help protect the warheads
and laboratories, and whether Pakistan’s
reluctance to reveal critical details
about its arsenal has undercut the
effectiveness of the continuing security
effort.
>
The aid, buried in secret portions of the
federal budget, paid for the training of
Pakistani personnel in the United States
and the construction of a nuclear security
training center in Pakistan, a facility
that American officials say is nowhere
near completion, even though it was
supposed to be in operation this year.
>
A raft of equipment — from helicopters
to night-vision goggles to nuclear
detection equipment — was given to
Pakistan to help secure its nuclear
material, its warheads, and the
laboratories that were the site of the
worst known case of nuclear proliferation
in the atomic age.
>
While American officials say that they
believe the arsenal is safe at the moment,
and that they take at face value Pakistani
assurances that security is vastly
improved, in many cases the Pakistani
government has been reluctant to show
American officials how or where the gear
is actually used.
All that money spent and they still
don’t know if the nukes are safe or not.
Uh huh. MAYBE
THIS IS WHY GENERAL PETRAEUS BETRAYUS IS
PICKING NEW GENERALS AS WE SPEAK! Yeah,
yeah, when Busharraf wants a war with Iran
before he leaves office and when Busharraf
loves what Musharraf is doing in his country
with his Martial Law plan, well, NEW
GENERALS ARE A MUST!
Of course, everything Georgie &
Dickie have done over the past seven years
has been ONE BIG SECRET, so really, what
they tell us in their press conferences
about what they’re doing is the exact
opposite of what they’re really doing. How
can we find out the truth? Oh that’s
right! Everything is a secret and the paper
shredders have been working non-stop, 24/7,
for the past seven years…..so we can’t.
I think Georgie & Dickie want to win
real bad next year in the election.
They’re gearing up folks! We won’t be
worrying about the price of oil or gas this
winter or even in the spring, because ole
Georgie & Dickie know that there will be
bigger fish to fry come next summer! Between
nuke attacks on our soil via them and
Martial Law via them, where will we have the
time to focus on the election? Oh that’s
right. All dictators don’t like elections
and will do everything in their power to
suppress this atrocious democratic tool,
just because dictators don’t want to hear
the truth about them or their party when
their citizens go to cast their votes! Spit.
I hate them.
Eye opening piece in this
morning’s Post regarding the next wave of “young
conservatives” poised to take up the mantle of the nearly
dead ideology known as conservatism.
My favorite quip comes from this young, freshly scrubbed,
“go-getter” on illegal immigration.
“When [Daniel Lipian, chairman of the College
Republicans at Bowling
Green State University] wanted to spark a debate about
immigration, he and other College Republicans club members
put up a fence in the plaza and hosted a “Catch an
Illegal Immigrant Day.” On one side of the fence,
he kept out club members wearing T-shirts that said
“Illegal Immigrant.” “We were attacked over
and over again by the left,” he said.
I’m sure the sophomoric and idiotic theme “to catch
an illegal” had nothing do with his “being attacked”
at all.
More importantly, the young, mean squares seem split over
whom to support in ‘08:
Like the ideology they are clinging hopelessly to, the
Republican party is in disarray and nearly extinct.
But people do change, so I suppose we shouldn’t be too
hard on them. Truth be told (and baring my soul for a
moment), I really identify with the confusion and tunnel
vision expressed by the kids in the piece because I was in
the College Republicans back in the 80’s. Yes…heresy!
And voted for Ron Paul, a Libertarian, in my first
presidential election (before moving left as I got into my
30’s).
The words remain ugly, without a doubt. This however, is an
entirely different way of looking at it, isn't it though?
One example of how long we've been
dealing with this underhanded crap as Dems find their voice while Bush
lies to the public again today!
From James Joiner for An
Average American Patriot
One example of how long we've been dealing with this
underhanded crap as Dems find their voice while Bush lies
to the public again!
House Democrats distinguished themselves this week when
they stood up to the White House’s latest military
funding steamroller: approving only $50 billion of the
additional $196 billion the president requested for the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They also set conditions on
the funding, including demands that troops start coming
home from Iraq within 30 days and that the withdrawal be
completed by mid-December 2008.
Senate Democrats quickly brought the House plan to the
floor. But, ever the spoilers, Republicans blocked it, as
they have other attempts to rein in Mr. Bush’s
war-without-end in Iraq. Predictably, the White House —
which always prefers fear-mongering to serious debate —
accused Democrats of undermining the troops. Even Defense
Secretary Robert Gates got into the act, threatening to
direct the Army and Marine Corps to begin developing plans
to lay off employees and terminate contracts next year
unless Congress approves new funding within days.
Lawmakers, regardless of party, and the American people
will always stand behind the brave men and women in the
armed forces. Congress has already approved some $800
billion in funding since Sept. 11, 2001, for the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan. But that hardly measures the full
cost in blood and treasure. More than 800 troops have been
killed in Iraq in 2007 alone, making it the deadliest year
yet for the American military there. Read
the whole story
I heard threats of base closings and cut backs and it
reminded me of the last time the chief idiot played this
game. Supposedly it was not Political but you know damn
well it was and it will be this time too to teach a lesson
to those that voted against him. Look at the chief idiots
response then look at what he did 2 years ago!
I had the ill fortune of being in the car this morning
when the chief idiots address came on this morning
chastising the Democrats for making him be responsible and
I hope this time they stick to their guns. Senate
Republicans on Friday blocked a Democratic bill that
sought to link $50 billion in additional war funding to
the goal of withdrawing American combat troops from Iraq
by the end of next year. And Senate Democrats blocked a
Republican bill that would have allocated $70 billion to
the war without conditions.
They went on vacation instead. I heard Bush threatening
tax increases on the middle class because of Democrats.
Since when does he care about the middle class he has
purposely been destroying since he got in office. I am so
sick of this idiots games just so he can get his way on
continue his wars. As I was driving I decided to look at
the last time he pulled his crap on the military to get
his way. It was sickening to see just one example of the
chief babies tactics of I am going to hold my breath until
you give me what I want! look at what Iraq war veteran
John Bruhns said. It
is right on
Anyway, It's sickening, remember this? 10/28/05 Update! A
Little more time for the Apolitical Political Bush Base
Closings
With the proposed base closings due to be a reality in mid
November I thought it was time to just remind us all how
crooked these closings were and still are. In light of
what is happening right now with the Rove's investigation
and implication of Cheney you know the President was
involved and as in this situation nothing period gets done
without his knowledge or okay and he knows the truth none
of us ever will. Right from the get go we discussed the
proposed Military base closings. In one of our discussions
we talked about the fact that telling the public they had
nothing at all to do with Politics was totally false and
erroneous.
Bush as we all know , does nothing at all unless it is
part of his political game. So once again this master of
deception was saying what we wanted to hear and playing
his Political game. The facts right off the bat told us
again the opposite of what he was saying. We all know this
is standard fare for him. The States that came out in
favor of him in the 2nd election did well with the
proposed Base closings. The bases that came out against
him took the biggest hits during the proposed closings. It
didn't matter if the bases were exemplary or vital to our
military mission. California took a big hit because
republican Governor Arnold could not deliver the State for
the President. Massachusetts took a hit for the same
reason.
Otis in Massachusetts is where the fighters that responded
on 9/11 came from. It is one of the best reserve bases in
the Nation. He wanted to put all our B1's in one place in
his brother's State. That makes good sense. The Bible Belt
States did well under the proposed closings. He said as
far as he is concerned he thinks the proposals should be
final. Political, naw! One and one still equals two as far
as I know.
There are many inequities in these proposals. Many we will
never know unless some disgruntled individual comes forth
with the truth. Regardless of what Mr. say one thing and
do another says. He keeps tight reign over what happens in
his misadministration. That is precisely why it is so
screwed up. Even though he would have us believe he has ne
control over most of what happens in Washington and the
Pentagon in particular, you know nothing can be further
from the truth.
As we all know he is a master political game player. It is
his behind the back club to be used against anyone he
perceives as having done him wrong. He does a lousy job of
disguising this fact. In addition to all his inequities in
his administration and in these proposals we can now add
this one. Now we are hearing that the money supposedly
saved from these closings was false. It was purposely
contrived in order to inflate the supposed savings. Why
should we be surprised to find the 9 member panel doing
the investigation has found the savings inflated by 30
billion?
How much did it cost us this time to find out we were
lied to again? I know, just another little oversight. This
is standard fare for this administration as we all know.
As in all the other instances he will get away with this
one too. Someone else's fault not mine, just another
victim of circumstances. The poor picked on guy. He
suffers from the Rodney Dangerfield Syndrome. He gets no
respect. You have to wonder how deep the rot will go in
this case too when the truth is eventually to some degree
known and what if any the real savings after all was said
and done really were.Read

Interested in the Gitmo Playbook?
From Fran for Ramblings
The manual appears to reveal information that has previously
been intentionally withheld. For example, it "indicates
some prisoners were designated as off-limits to visitors
from the International Committee of the Red Cross, something
the military has repeatedly denied," the British news
agency writes.
It also addresses the minutia of military prison management.
Styrofoam cups, for instance, must be confiscated if
prisoners have written on them, apparently because they may
then be a vehicle for passing forbidden notes from one
prisoner to another. Meanwhile, "(i)f the cup is
damaged or destroyed, the detainee will be disciplined for
destruction of government property," the manual states.
Just watched a film titled *GITMO*, I can't believe the US
has this remote prison. A great quote from the movie:
Why do we need a prison on the other side of the law?
News items I did not know about:
10/5/07 The chief military prosecutor for the Guantanamo Bay
war tribunals has resigned, apparently over a lack of
prosecutorial discretion.
11/1/07 A private practitioner from Canada who represents a
Guantanamo Bay detainee held since the age of 15 has
reportedly been banned by his military co-counsel from the
client's upcoming arraignment at a military tribunal.
Because of a dispute with co-counsel selected by the
Pentagon about how best to handle the defense of Omar Khadr,
a Canadian-born Muslim who is now 21, attorney Dennis Edney
says he has been told he cannot attend next week's
arraignment, according to the Associated Press.
11/8/07 A Marine Corps lawyer has been told by his superiors
that he may not testify before Congress about his decision
to abandon a Guantanamo prosecution because of his concerns
that a high-level detainee was tortured.
Lt. Col. V. Stuart Couch, a former Guantanamo prosecutor who
is now a military judge, had decided he could not prosecute
a suspected al-Qaida terrorist because believed the
detainee's incriminating statements were improperly
obtained, the Wall Street Journal reports (sub. req.). The
detainee, Mohamedou Ould Slahi, was allegedly subjected to
beatings, death threats, and threats against his mother.
Slinging Blame Like Only A President Can
From Windspike for Educational
Whisper
Ross Perot was spot on when he dubbed the Whitehouse
"the Bully Pulpit." You will remember a while ago
when the current batch of bullies in this pulpit were
suggesting that playing the "blame game" was
inappropriate and claimed to take the moral high ground by
disavowing said game. Of course, today, in his weekly Radio
Address (admit it, you listen like Harry Potter in your
closet underneath the stairs so no one knows you do), the
President and head bully is slinging blame like only a
president can.
It's convenient when you can load up heaping doses of blame
for a failure you generated on some one else other than one
self. Have a look:
It is clear that Congress's failure to adjust the AMT for
inflation was a mistake. Unfortunately, Congress seems
determined to compound this original mistake by making
another one. Last week, the House passed a bill that
provides relief from the AMT -- but raises other taxes.
Congress should not use legislation that millions of
Americans are counting on to protect them from higher
taxes in one area as an excuse to raise taxes in other
areas. I
will veto any bill that raises taxes as a condition of
fixing the AMT. Members of Congress must put political
theater behind them, fix the AMT, and protect America's
middle class from an unfair tax hike.
Who's to blame that the taxes are too low to cover the cost
of a majority of what the President is trying to accomplish?
How are we paying for the conflagration in Iraq? Is it
fiscally responsible to require the funds to pay for the
operations of a government or to hock our nations' future to
pay for a war on a nation we never needed to wage?
Congress is also failing to meet its responsibilities to
our troops. For months, Congress has delayed action on
supplemental war funding because some in Congress want to
make a political statement about the war. On Wednesday,
the House passed a bill that once again has Congress
directing our military commanders on how to conduct the
war in Iraq as a condition for funding our troops. We do
not need members of Congress telling our commanders what
to do. We need Congress listening to our military
commanders and giving them what they need to win the war
against extremists and radicals. Congress knows I'll
veto this bill. During this time of war, our troops
deserve the full support of Congress -- and that means
giving our troops the funding they need to successfully
carry out their mission. I urge Congress to work quickly
and send me a clean bill so we can fulfill our obligation
to our brave men and women in uniform.
Really, who's fault is it that we are in an intractable war
that we are serving in a co-dependent relationship
facilitating the current dysfunctional Iraqi government?
Who's to blame for getting our country to where it is today?
The culpable are usually those that protest and point the
fingers the strongest. Threatening a veto and slinging
blame, in particular, is a strong signal that the
Presidential wagging finger of blame need be pointed in a
mirror.
But of course, every good Presidential radio address needs
to point to solutions right?
With both of these delays, congressional leaders
are choosing political posturing over the priorities
of the people. These choices have real-world consequences
for our taxpayers and our troops. When members of Congress
return from their two-week-long Thanksgiving vacation,
they will have only a few weeks left on the legislative
calendar before they go home again for their Christmas
break. I call on Congress to use the time that is left to
do what is right -- and pass AMT relief and fund our
troops in combat.
Who is doing the posturing in a political way Mr. President?
Last I checked, the priorities of the American people were
to bring our troops home from Iraq, but then again, I live
in the real world.
Everyone in the press is pretty much unilaterally saying
that the surge in Iraq has been a success, that violence is
down because of the surge, troop deaths are down because of
the surge, and Iraqi deaths are down because of the surge.
The press is full of headlines on how things in Iraq are
much better without any critical analysis.
But behind all of this everyone is forgetting that
Muqtada al-Sadr’s militia is still on stand-down. No one
is considering how much the violence in Iraq has dropped
because of Muqtada al-Sadr versus the surge. It’s likely
that al-Sadr is stock piling weapons just waiting for the
day the U.S. leaves Iraq.
It wasn’t that long ago that the media and the
Administration warned against interpreting a drop in
violence as a sign that the U.S. should leave Iraq. The
prevailing wisdom then was the insurgents were holding back
hoping we will leave so they can then make their move to
take over the country. Then the violence worsened pretty
much negating any need for that argument.
It bothers me that the surge is being attributed to the
so-called ‘success’ in Iraq when it’s not clear the
surge has had any affect at all.
But beyond that, if Fox News wants Bush to declare
victory in Iraq and bring our troops home before the ’08
election then so be it. Maybe I should just join in the fray
and declare the surge a great success, that our brave leader
Bush’s strategery in Iraq was brilliant, and in the battle
of the U.S. vs. Iraqi Insurgents the U.S. has won.
Is that what it will take? In order for our troops to
come home do we need to give credit to Bush for it to
happen? If so, should we all start praising Bush and the
Iraq War while celebrating victory so we can finally get our
troops home and end the occupation of Iraq?
Anne

but more on that later...
Encouraging news that the WGA and producers will go back to
the negotiating table after Thanksgiving. Some say CAA's
Brian Lourd initiated the call. Others say Alex Rodriguez.
Public opinion could have had an impact. Recent polls
suggest more people believe O.J. than the AMPTP.
Let's hope the talks are productive and the producers don't
want to spend a lot of time working out minimums for the WB
& UPN, formulas for Betamax tapes, and new credit
guidelines for hour variety show writers.
I couldn’t be happier that Patric Verrone is our WGA
president in this difficult struggle but I just wish he
didn’t look so much like Hitler.
There's going to be a big rally on Tuesday afternoon on
Hollywood Blvd. We've had actors, writers assistants, and
John Edwards participate. Now we invite prostitutes to walk
the line with us.
My friend, Darlene
Koldenhoven is an extraordinary Grammy winning singer.
She recently performed on a bill with Jennifer Holliday and
Natalie Cole and the LA WEEKLY said this:
Darlene Koldenhoven let
loose a piercing high note near the end of her performance,
it may have been the only time in history that an opera
singer’s rapturous crowd response was led by someone in
the audience yelling . . .YOU BETTER WORK, BITCH!"
High praise indeed!
Koldenhoven, by the way, is her stage name. She performs
again December 2nd at the Jazz
Factory in LA. She’s also the lead singer of the KRTH
radio jingles, which is why she can sing all her big hits in
under a minute.
Finally!!
All-time home run chump Barry "U.S." Bonds, was
indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury on perjury and
obstruction of justice charges after a four-year
investigation into whether he lied under oath about his use
of steroids. Big debate in baseball circles: should his
police record also have an asterisk?
It's now likely the Hall of Fame will not have either the
home run king nor the player with the most hits.
My favorite new character on television is "Cutthroat

Good news! The LA TIMES has begun its Oscar coverage with a
weekly special section called THE ENVELOPE. Meanwhile,
strike coverage has been relegated to the Business Section.
I somehow can’t see THE DETROIT FREE-PRESS not running
stories about an auto strike on page one. But then again GM
doesn’t own the DETROIT FREE-PRESS.
And good luck to the stagehands in New York on their strike.
Disney flew in a top labor relations negotiator from LA.
It's one thing to strike Broadway, it's another to mess with
THE LITTLE MERMAID musical.

Deceased Marine's Gravesite Vandalized
From Amy Branham for Amy's
Head
Walpole, Massachusetts – In a Boston suburb, vandals
defaced the gravestone of a 20-year-old Marine who lost his life to a
sniper’s bullet while on his second tour of duty on Operation Iraqi
Freedom.
Lance Corporal Alexander Scott Arredondo, USMC was laid to rest on
September 4, 2004 in Rural Cemetery located in Walpole, Massachusetts, and
the site of a family-owned plot. "The vandalism took place sometime
prior to September 28th", according to Carlos Arredondo, Alex’s
father who last visited the gravesite days before.
Arredondo Senior frequently visits the cemetery to keep his son’s plot
decorated and neat. On Sunday, October 28th, 2007 an Iraqi American
doctor, a videographer and two Viet Nam war veterans requested that Carlos
and his wife, Mélida lead them to a visit to Rural Cemetery to pay homage
to Alex. "All of us were stunned and saddened by this act of
desecration," stated Mélida Arredondo.
The Walpole police department was called immediately and a report was
filed. Carlos and his son Brian Arredondo returned to the gravesite the
following day to clean the tombstone and to sand the scratches out of the
granite. The pictures above were taken prior to cleaning. If you have
information on this matter, please contact the Walpole Police Department
at (508) 668-1095 or by sending an email to info@walpolepd.com.
Alex, as friends and family called him, was 20 years and 20 days old when
he was killed while part of the siege in An Najaf, Iraq on 08/25/04.
A second troop who was killed while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom is
also buried at Rural Cemetery. No sign of vandalism or disturbance was
noted at that or any other gravesite.
Musharraf Shuts Down Opposition TV While
Negroponte Watches
From Boss Kitty for BlueBloggin
Two leading Pakistani media outlets that
had their television broadcasts shut down inside Pakistan have now
been forced to end international broadcasts. VOA’s
Barry Newhouse reports from Islamabad that the new crackdown on
independent media came as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John
Negroponte met with President Pervez Musharraf.
Government officials in Islamabad shut down domestic broadcasts
by leading Pakistani media outlet Geo
television when emergency rule was imposed on November 3. Since
then, network officials say, the government has waged a campaign to
financially cripple the station, intimidating advertisers and
suspending sports and entertainment programs.
Pakistan’s main networks have continued to broadcast abroad
through Internet and satellite transmissions. But early Saturday,
Geo officials said the government pressured the networks’ partners
in Dubai to stop relaying its overseas transmissions, effectively
shutting down their operations.
ARY One World reporters protest
Pakistan’s new media rules, 17 Nov. 2007
Some independent news channels have signed a new broadcast
contract that allowed them to return to the airwaves in recent days,
but Geo and ARY
One World have not. Geo President Imran
Aslam calls the contract “draconian.” He told VOA the contract
allows officials to enter television offices at will, seize
equipment and arrest employees.
“There have been indications that they would like to see some
of our anchors, some of our hosts, some of our journalists sidelines
- so we can be tamed a little bit,” he said. “And this is not
something we were willing to adhere to.”
The crackdown against the broadcasters was swiftly condemned by
journalists, lawyers and political opposition leaders.
Ansar Abbassi, a senior editor
with The News newspaper, says he is one of several
political reporters who have been unofficially barred by the
government from appearing on television networks. “I believe we
have been vocal both through our writings and when we are on the
air,” he said. “We had no enmity with any party, but
representing the people’s view, I think this is not acceptable to
Musharraf.” Abassi said despite the crackdowns, General Musharraf
remains politically strong, because he still enjoys the backing of
the United States.
ISLAMABAD,
Nov 16: The Geo television network said on Friday that it had
been ordered to shut down its news channel. The channel beams its
signals from Dubai. Late on Friday night, a spokesman for the ARY
network called Dawn’s Karachi and Lahore offices, saying that the
group had been told to shut down its news channel.
Freedom of Speech is the scariest loss. IT
IS DONE. Thought police and Orwellian behavior promote clandestine
responses.
The political manipulation of language, by obfuscation, e.g.
WAR IS PEACE. Using language to reduce and eliminate ideas and
their meanings that are deemed dangerous to its authority.
Invasion of personal privacy, either directly physically or
indirectly by surveillance.
State control of its citizens’ daily life, as in a “Big
Brother” society.
Official encouragement of policies contributing to the
socio-economic disintegration of the family.
The substitution of traditional religion with the adoration of
the State and its Leaders and their Party.
The encouragement of “doublethink,”
whereby the population must learn to embrace inconsistent
concepts without dissent, e.g. giving up liberty for freedom.
The revision of history in the favour of the State’s
interpretation of it.
George Orwell may as well have provided
the blueprint for Bush & Musharraf to build their dysfunctional
worlds. Freedoms are threats to their agendas and they will cloak
their activities in “Double Speak” while they whittle freedom
away.
Both dictators guilty of “oppressive
political ideas and the use of euphemistic political language
in public discourse to camouflage morally outrageous ideas and
actions.” Pakistani Bloggers are going crazy about this escalation
of suppression:

1. Prepare Pastry for Single-Crust Pie.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to
a 12-inch circle. Transfer pastry to a 9-inch pie
plate. Ease pastry into pie
plate, being careful not to stretch pastry.
Trim; crimp edge as desired.
2. For Crumb Topping, stir
together brown sugar, 1/2 cup all-purpose
flour, and the oats. Using a pastry
blender, cut inbutter
until the topping mixture resembles coarse
crumbs. Set aside.
3. In a large mixing bowl stir together the granulated
sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, the cinnamon,
and salt. Add apple
slices and gently toss until coated. Transfer apple
mixture to the pastry-lined pie plate. Sprinkle
crumb topping over applemixture.
4. To prevent overbrowning, cover edge of pie
with foil. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil. Bake
for 25 to 30 minutes more or until top is golden. Remove from oven; sprinklepie with pecans, then
drizzle with caramel topping. Cool on a wire
rack. Makes 8 servings.
Pastry for Single-Crust Pie: In a bowl stir
together 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
Using a pastry blender, cut-in 1/3 cup
shortening until pieces are pea-size. Using 4 to 5 tablespoons cold
water total, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of water
at a time over the flour mixture, tossing with
a fork until all of the dough is moistened. Form dough
into a ball.

Well not quite, but
violence in Basra is down
90%.
Attacks against
British and Iraqi

90 percent in southern
Iraq since London
withdrew its troops
from the main city of
Basra, the commander
of British forces
there said Thursday.
The presence of
British forces in
downtown Basra, Iraq's
second-largest city,
was the single largest
instigator of
violence, Maj. Gen.
Graham Binns told
reporters Thursday on
a visit to Baghdad's
Green Zone.
"We thought, 'If
90 percent of the
violence is directed
at us, what would
happen if we stepped
back?'" Binns
said. Britain's
5,000 troops moved out
of a former Saddam
Hussein palace at
Basra's heart in early
September, setting up
a garrison at an
airport on the city's
edge. Since that
pullback, there's been
a "remarkable and
dramatic drop in
attacks," Binns
said.
Fightin' them over there

fightin' us....over
there. Because if we
pull out now, it's the

Sorry, but I have to rant here. America is ALWAYS at a
crossroads, but I think we are at a major one at this
time. I apologize for the inordinate length of the
following, but please read it, enjoy the cartoons, and
make comments. Thanks! I
continue to believe, more and more, that the Democrats
are getting ready to make a historically tragic mistake
in nominating Hillary Clinton to run for president. She
seems to get most of the media coverage, polls continue
to show her leading her Democratic opponents, some polls
show her beating GOP contenders in a national election.
Nonetheless, I don't believe she should get the
nomination. Why am I so convinced she is unelectable?
Other than lefties who really do believe in her as a
candidate, who else wants her to get the nomination,
besides this guy: I
think the media would generally like for Hillary to get
the nomination, so they are giving her more coverage
than they give Obama and Edwards. I think the media is
not "liberal" or "right wing" as
much as it is "corporate": what they think we
will buy or tune in to is what we hear and see... it's
driven by dollars and not by politics, as the mythmakers
would have us believe. Hillary would be more sensational
than any of her competitors, and sensational stuff
always sells more copy. There is a greater likelihood of
scandal, old or new, to report about if Hillary gets the
nomination. Think stories like O.J. Simpson, Britney
Spears, etc. but on steroids. I
believe the right wing wants her to run because they
know she will be much easier to smear than her
competitors given her history, and they are also
counting on the notion that half of America flat-out
hates her to carry them to victory in next year's
elections, both presidential and Congressional. Think of
what all that "Hillary hatred" will do for GOP
fund raising (or hopefully for her Democratic opponents
as well!) The
Republicans will also be counting on gaining seats in
Congress if she gets the nomination, and they will
generate fear in the public by describing how awful it
will be if "someone like her" becomes
president and has a Democrat-controlled Congress with
which to work... of course also telling us to
"never mind" that we endured that same kind of
thing from 2000 to 2006, with 2006-2008 marked by them
making it look like the Democrat-led Congress is
"do-nothing": Sure,
the Dems could have done more to go after Bush. The
sorry fact of the matter, besides their favoring stem
cell research in hopes that it may help them grow a
spine, is that they just don't have the numbers to
override the GOP... at least not yet. But for now, this
image persists: Some
on the far left seem to want Hillary Clinton to get the
nomination because she is a woman. I don't CARE if she
is a woman or not. Her gender is not important to me at
all. What is important to me is getting out of Iraq,
repealing Bush's "tax cuts", ending the
suppression of science, returning some semblance of
transparency to government, increasing environmental
protections, increasing our research into alternative
fuel sources, reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, and
providing access to health care for ALL Americans. So
Hillary Clinton is a woman... so what? I just want the
Dems to nominate somebody who can win, and someone who
is definite about what he or she wants for the country. Some
on the left also want her to be nominated because they
still like her husband. Again, so what? Bill wouldn't be
running the country, she would be. And while she was
busy being president, I can't imagine he wouldn't be
seeking ways to pleasure himself... and who wants or
needs more of that? I know I don't. Especially when I
consider that if she becomes president she will be under
unbelievably intense attacks by the right wing, nearly
all of whom would be talking impeachment from the very
day she took office, not unlike we on the left have been
with Bush/Cheney. I have mixed feelings about Bill
Clinton, but I do believe he would be the ultimate
political albatross as "first husband". He
would certainly be under almost as much scrutiny and
attack as she would be. Any
of the contending GOP ghouls would love to run against
Hillary. They would love to talk about how the country
can't afford to get bogged down with political scandals
at a time when "we are at war", while all the
time it will of course be THEM trying to get the
scandals up and running, with asswipes like this
insuring that the disinformation gets spread far and
wide: The
Dems have been trying to get scandals going around Bush
since before he got into office, but the public is not
going to be interested in POLITICAL scandals that
revolve around abuse of power, torture, diminution of
the Constitution, or secrecy and suppression... the
public is far more interested in lurid PERSONAL stuff,
like blowjobs and stained dresses... or as we saw in
2006, about members of Congress sending lurid e-mails to
pages, or evangelical ministers hiring hookers and
buying meth: If
Hillary is nominated, the GOP has a treasure trove of
negative personal stuff to reopen... shady land deals,
"murder" (according to Rush Limbaugh),
stealing documents, lying about sex, etc. I'm sure the
Republican smear machine probably has new stuff all
ready to go at politically advantageous times. They are
MUCH more politically creative than we are on the left.
Whereas the Dems count on the public being smart and
they try to appeal to the intelligence of Americans, the
GOP tries to appeal to fear, and they rely on what they
perceive as our stupidity. Hillary Clinton would fit
into their general attitude/strategy like a hand fits
into a snug glove. You
can go ahead and call me a "liberal elitist"
for insinuating Americans are stupid, I don't care. I
have decided over the years that we Americans generally
ARE stupid. Not stupid due to organic causes such as
genetics or specific regions in which we might live, but
stupid due to insidious things we are susceptible to and
to which we are constantly exposed in our environment.
These are things such as news presented as
"infotainment"and the evolution of the press
into a "corporate" media; our dominant media,
television, being one in which it is virtually
impossible for average people to interact and
participate; the right wing's virtual monopoly on radio;
the introduction and public acceptance of FOX
"News"; public preoccupation with sports and
celebrities; it just goes on and on. In my opinion,
people in America have become stupid because we have
been successfully distracted, by design, from being
informed participants in the workings of our nation.
Thus it will be far easier for someone like Rudy
McRomney or Mike (I Don't Heart) Huckabee to have a
political advantage in a presidential election...
because they will use those factors that have
dumbed-down America to their political advantage. I'm
not saying Hillary WON'T get nominated, but I will say
she CAN'T. Not if we want an end to the fiasco in Iraq,
anyway. At least not if we want the Bush"tax
cuts" repealed. Not if we want to fund stem cell
research and other scientific endeavors. Not if we want
to have a better shot at becoming less oil-dependent. Of
those things I just mentioned, how many GOP candidates
will try to accomplish them? The answer is, of course,
none of the above. And even if she wanted to accomplish
those things, Hillary wouldn't be able to because she
would be too embroiled in controversy. So,
who to vote for if you are as anti-GOP, or at least as
anti-neocon, as I am? In my case, I will vote for a
Democrat besides Clinton during Oregon's primary, I'll
write letters and send e-mails urging friends, family
and community members to do likewise, I'll put up a sign
in my yard for one of her Democratic competitors, put
bumper stickers on my cars, etc... and once I feel like
I have done all I can, I'll wait, hold my breath, and
hope she doesn't get the nomination. If she gets it?
I'll hold my nose and vote for her in the general
election anyway because I think electing someone like
Fred Thompson or Rudy Giuliani would provide far graver
consequences for our country and for the world than she
would, despite all of her real or perceived negatives.
Her one main "positive" as I see it? She is
not Fred, Rudy, John, Mike or Mitt, whose names lead me
to my obligatory picture of a turdpile: Whatever
happens and whoever wins, 1/20/09 is a date I eagerly
anticipate. Even if a Republican wins the White House, I
will still be able to take some consolation in knowing
that even though a new GOP president might well continue
Bush policies, Bush himself would no longer be president
and that DICK CHENEY would (hopefully) no longer be
lurking in the background, orchestrating destruction. How
many of Hillary Clinton's negatives I describe here do
you think are simply perceived by me or a few others,
and how many do you think are real? What say you? I am
hoping for some pleasant surprises in the next 6-8
months. Anyone think there may be surprises in store?
Since
the invasion of Iraq in 2003, US army desertions are up
80%.
More US veterans have committed suicide than have died
in Iraq.
In 2005, 6,256 vets committed suicide at an average of
17 per day.
In the 20-24 age group, they averaged 22.9 suicides a
day, four times the national US average.
One in four homeless people in the US are veterans even
though they represent just 11% of the adult population. One
in four! Times

I'm writing this for all you fuckwits out there chiming
in to comments
at CBC that Jeremy Hinzman and Brandon Hughey are
cowards, that they shouldn't have signed up if they
didn't want to fight, that people can't change their
minds, that if they were willing to go to Afghanistan
they should be willing to go to Iraq, that as war
deserters they deserves to be sent back to face courts
martial and jail in the US.
Hinzman
enlisted in 2001 at age 22. A year later he and his wife
had become Quakers. After his application for
conscientious objector status was denied, he served his
tour of duty as an armourer in Afghanistan. It was not
till his unit was to be redeployed to Iraq that he
deserted to Canada in 2004 with his wife and child.
Hinzman
in 2004 : "The war on Iraq is immoral and
illegal. If you are ever going to wreak havoc on a
country, it would need to be justified. Every
justification or rationale that we have ever offered for
going to Iraq has been bogus. There were no weapons of
mass destruction there. There have been no links
established between Saddam and international terrorists,
and then the notion that we're going to bring democracy
to Iraq is -- we'll see if that comes to fruition, but I
don't think we'll see it, unless it's convenient to
America's agenda."
So he did his duty in Afghanistan but couldn't stomach
Iraq.
How exactly does this differ from Canada's
official position on Iraq?
Nonetheless the very reasons that caused Hinzman to
desert are the same ones that he is not allowed to use
in his application to the Immigration Board of Canada. Hinzman
on his Immigration hearing : "They raised the
issue that they felt that the legality of the war in
Iraq was irrelevant to our refugee claims. So, we were
unable to argue that in any way."
But because he originally volunteered and did complete
his tour in Afghanistan, he is not considered to be a
conscientious objector so he isn't eligible for refugee
status. Amnesty International disagrees.
Last week, after losing two immigration hearings and one
from the Federal Court, the Supreme Court of Canada
declined to hear their case. Their only hope now is a
parliamentary intervention, one which would be certain
to piss off the US. Does the Security and Prosperity
Pact even allow Canada to accept war resistors now?
That protest sign behind Hinzman reads : "Canada
should be a refuge from militarism - Pierre
Trudeau".
Well? Are we? Or are we so thoroughly enmeshed in the
illegal US war on terra that we are the cowards now?
WASHINGTON - Just when it appeared Julie
Myers had cleared every hurdle in her quest to
officially become the nation's top immigration official, a
dreadlocked wig and a prisoner's outfit could cost her the
job.
Myers, director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
ran into trouble earlier this month after she and two
other agency managers gave the "most original"
costume award to a white
employee who came to the agency's Halloween party dressed
as an escaped prisoner with dreadlocks and darkened skin.
Ah, blackface.
Some of my readers might note that I am no
stranger to controversies of this type, and therefore I
recuse myself from judging the actions of Myers or her
chosen contestant, leaving that to others more worthy than
I.
But something about this story troubles me...A disconnect
seemingly unremarked upon, to wit:
Myers has apologized repeatedly for the costume incident,
saying she was
"shocked and horrified" to learn the employee
had altered his skin color..
She was shocked that he 'had
altered his skin color'...Yet she still
awarded him the prize.
Some key lawmakers have rallied to her defense, including Joe
Lieberman, the Connecticut independent who chairs
the Senate Homeland Security committee, and Sen. Susan
Collins, R-Maine, the panel's top Republican.
"Senator Lieberman regrets her lapse in judgment
regarding the Halloween incident," spokeswoman Leslie
Phillips said. "He is inclined to support her
nomination, given the committee's review of her entire
record, the fact that the union representing 7000 ICE
employees supports her and her year's experience in
office."
Lieberman angrily
demanded that Lamont denounce the action and sever all
ties with Jane Hamsher,
the founder of the Web log Firedoglake, who posted the
photo on another blog, HuffingtonPost.com.
...
Lieberman called on Lamont to ban Hamsher from traveling
with the campaign, refuse to take any money raised by
Hamsher, and remove any links to her postings on his Web
site.
But then, this wouldn't be the same
Joe Lieberman who promised to investigate the U.S.
Government's response to Hurricane Katrina while running for
office last year,
and quietly
closed the door on such effortsthis
year in his role as head of the Committee on Homeland
Security and Government Affairs...Now
would it?

Hopefully the number of Democratic senators who vote

we run out of money to funnel into it.
